Fun Activities For Seniors

by admin on August 17, 2010

There are plenty of fun activities to keep your mind and body feeling great and for the young at heart, here are some of my top suggestions.

Swimming Classes

Whether you’re in your city or on one of those all inclusive vacations, there is always some kind of swimming activity for you to do. Swimming and water based exercises are often recommended physical activities for seniors because they have the lowest impact rate for injuries and work out the entire body, using almost all the major muscle groups at the same time. Moreover, aquatic exercises take the pressure off joints, and those who exercise through water-based activities suffer from fewer aches and pains after exercising.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is an internal martial art and is the most popular form of exercise in the world. Highly beneficial for your health, it is a low-impact, relaxing form of exercise that only requires about 20 minutes a day yielding tremendously rewarding outcomes on your body, mind and spirit. Tai Chi helps relieve stress, promotes deep breathing, improves lower body and leg strength, improves balance and stability and helps improve balance among many other health benefits.

Photography

Digital technology makes picture-taking easier than ever so how about buying yourself a digital camera and giving photography a whirl? Digital cameras are easy to use, encourage you to get out of the house and the fact that you can see the image you’re taking right away is great fun and also a helpful indicator of your skills. Who knows? With a simple point, click and shoot you may be on your way to becoming the next Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Journaling

Revisit your past and put your memory to the test by keeping a journal. Everyone has a story and writing your very own memoirs is a great way to keep you busy and brush up on your writing skills.

Jewlery-Making

Consider taking a jewelry-making class or see what creative things you can do with some of your old jewelry.

Open Mic Nights

Everyone could use a good laugh so inform yourself about some local open mic comedy shows taking place near you. Laughter makes for good health and when you laugh, endorphins are released, relieving stress, relaxing facial muscles and simply making you feel great not to mention, more pleasant to be around.

Book Club

If you love books, why not share your passion with other bookworms by joining a book club? Giving you the chance to interact with others and participate in lengthy discussions about your favourite tales is a great way to exercise the mind, socialize with others and keep you up-to-date on the latest books to check out.

Learning a new skill

Learning a new skill is a great way to stimulate the brain and helps reload your memory ammo, so consider learning a new language or instrument to keep those creative juices flowing. As the saying goes “you’re never too old to learn”.

Volunteer Usher

Volunteer ushers are always in need among professional theater, opera and dance companies, in order to pass out programs and help the paying customers find their seats. If you enjoy the arts and interacting with people, it’s a prefect activity, as you will receive free admission to the performance, and even get to see all the backstage happenings before the curtain goes up.
