Healthy Hobbies

OUT AND ABOUT

Keeping busy helps me keep an active mind and body. I have always been an avid music and book collector, so some of my favorite activities are of course perusing record shops and used book stores. Even books and music can contribute to your active lifestyle.

Crouching amongst the shelves and stretching for those hard to reach, out-of-print books really keeps me limber. I also find that the ambiance of the used bookstore is one that lends itself to good stories. Being active and healthy also means staying social. Shops like these lend themselves to that very thing. A big part of the challenge to staying active is maintaining your level of interest in an activity.

ACTIVE CHOICES

It is of equal importance to find activities that are physically challenging as it is important to be a part of mentally challenging activities.

Being a fan of movies and theater, I decided to get involved in student films. Getting involved with a local theater or film group allows you to meet people you may not get the chance to otherwise. Preparing for a play or making a film is a sociable activity that also requires a significant amount physical effort and mental attention. Perhaps getting involved in a community based project of this kind could be the thing to connect you to the hobby you crave to pursue.

It’s not always easy to find a social activity that is right for you
. That’s why it is important to keep in mind that having fun is most important. If you are into music, many young bands recording demos may relish the opportunity to have you sit in on a track.

In your retirement years you have the chance to live a whole new way. Going from day to day, indulging in interests unexplored or long forgotten. You have the opportunity to hone talents and meet new challenges. Retirement simply means keeping to your own schedule, and if it’s anything like mine than it’s a pretty full dance card.
